Jake's Journey

June 2004

(34w 1d): What is it about six weeks that sounds so much closer than seven or eight weeks? Wow! I just can't believe how quickly August is approaching!

According to everything I've read, Jake is right around 5 pounds this week! His crown to rump length is about 12.8 inches, and his total length is around 19.8 inches. He is currently working on developing his own immune system to fight mild infections, and his lungs are fully developed.

I've decided that there are moments when being pregnant and looking pregnant are actually pretty fun. For example, when you are in the grocery store, and realize that there are three clerks bagging your groceries, and two of them practically knock eachother over trying to decide which one helps you out to the car.

Or, last week when I was in Best Buy doing some CD shopping; not only had my purse fallen forward, but the bag I was carrying didn't have handles so I was carrying it kind-of on my hip. Apparently all this was blocking my belly, when I realize this cute guy was looking at me. I look up and smile and he says hi, and I say hi, then turned to walk past him. It was obvious he hadn't gotten the full view before, and I think if it had shocked him any more he would have literally jumped back six feet. I really did stifle my laughter as best as I could... but it was hard!

(33w): We have between 5 and 9 weeks to go! Jake is growing every day, and weighs almost 4 1/2 pounds by now! His crown to rump length is about 12 inches (overall length is around 19.4 inches). During this week his fingernails will reach the ends of his fingertips. We are half-way through the eighth month, or, in other words, I have completed seven and a half months of pregnancy.

I watched a couple of episodes of A Baby Story (on TLC) the other day, one woman had twins, and the other triplets. Of the five babies only one weighed more than Jake does now. It was really cool to get an idea of how big he actually is now. Of course I saw one woman deliver a 10 1/2 pound baby (by c-section), and got an idea of how big he could be! Luckily I'm pretty sure I would be much bigger if he was going to be that big! But, it is amazing to see the two extremes, and nice to know that I fall neatly in the middle.

Matt and I had a wonderful time in Reno over the weekend. And, considering it will probably be our last weekend away for several months, we decided to live it up. We went out to a very nice dinner, had coffee and dessert sent up to our room, stayed up late, and slept in. Even though we didn't win any money, we didn't lose much either, and we had a great time doing it!

I hope to see everyone at the shower on the 26th, I believe invitations are in the mail, and should be arriving very soon!

(32w): By this week Jake weighs almost 4 pounds! His crown to rump length is over 11.6 inches (29 cm), and total length is around 18.9 inches (42 cm). In the last six to eight weeks before birth he will double in weight.

If you subscribe to the theory that months have four weeks, and pregnancy lasts 40 weeks and thus is actually 10 months long, then I have now been pregnant 8 months. If you, as I do, like the whole 9 month thing because some months are actually 5 weeks long (yes, this can get pretty confusing), then I won't have completed 8 months until week 35. Either way, this is the last week of the Lamaze class, and things seem to be getting really close.

Sunday afternoon I suddenly decided that a Jamba Juice was the only way I would make it through the day, so I got Matt and headed out. I guess I was in too much of a hurry because I didn't even give Matt time to get his sandals. I didn't think anything of it until we were almost there and Matt said we had to park close so he didn't burn his feet on the hot asphalt.

Well, unfortunately for him there didn't appear to be a single open space in the parking lot. I was starting to think we'd have to park across the street when suddenly he yells out "Expectant Mother Parking!" I have been in that parking lot more than a hundred times since December, and that spot must be less than 2 weeks old. Talk about timing!

I was somewhat torn about parking in this special spot. On the one hand, I am an expecting mother, it was the only spot in the parking lot, and Matt wasn't wearing shoes. But, on the other hand, I really don't mind the little bit of extra exercise (walking is good), and what if there is an expecting mother that needs it more than I do!? Of course, Matt not wearing shoes won out.

On the way back to the car we noticed a woman carrying a newborn in a car seat/carrier. It really seemed awkward and a bit heavy, and Matt and I decided that maybe the "expectant mother" parking should be "new mother parking." At this point all I'm lugging around is an extra 30 pounds, and a husband who can't remember his shoes.

(31w 1d): For those who have asked (and otherwise given me a hard time), I spent the morning working on a baby registry, and I think I'm finally finished. Almost everything on the list is just a general idea of the types of things we still need, and I don't care where they are purchased.

However, there are a few things that I have researched, and are very brand specific. They are pretty much the bigger things; stroller, car seat, co-sleeper, play-pen (called play-yard these days...so PC), the swing, monitor, and breast pump. I pretty much put them on the registry so I would remember which ones they are.

Something very cool: The car seat on the registry has a base that it snaps into. You can buy the base units separately, and I thought this would be a great alternative to the grandparents rushing out and buying their own car seats. Plus, it'll save you guys some money. The base is also on the registry (and I think it comes in one or two different colors).

For those who are interested, there is a link to the registry on the bottom left of the main page. You can also find it by going to babiesrus.com and putting in my name or Matt's name. The site also says that you can print it out at the store.

    Have fun!

(31w): Jake weighs about 3.5 pounds, and his crown-to-rump length is somewhere around 11.2 inches (overall length is about 18 inches). Visually, he may track moving objects with the eyes (though, what is moving in there?). When he blinks, the eye's iris responds to light and dark. The lungs and digestive track are nearly mature, although the last few weeks in-utero are still important for lung development. Jake's brain is still growing rapidly, making connections and learning complicated functions it will need for the rest of its life. I've also read that he could have a callous on his thumb from sucking on it.

So, the pictures don't really do it justice, but in the nursery photo album there are pictures of the new light fixture Matt put up over the weekend. That may sound like a simple thing to do, but not only did he have to get up into the attic and run all the wiring because that room didn't have an existing overhead fixture, but the blue background the cloud is on is an exclusive idea and design. We bought the cloud, but Matt went out and got the piece of wood, cut it, then primed and painted it (then mounted it!). It was a great idea, and he did such an awesome job that it looks like we bought it that way! He also put it on a dimmer switch so it isn't blinding for those 2am feedings. It is beautiful, and is really the crowning jewel of the room! Now, window treatments and new carpet, and the room will be complete.
