Jake's Journey

July 2004

  • Sat, Jul 31, 2004 10:49 PM

(39w 4d): Just thought some of you might be interested... went to the doctor on Friday and she said I'm 2cm dialated, 66% effaced, and the baby is at about a -2 station.

Basically that means that there has been progress, but really I could stay at this point for weeks. Like I told Matt; you can be showing no signs of progress and go into full blown labor ten minutes later, or be 4cm dialated for two months.

Kaiser won't let me go more than two weeks overdue (that seems like such a long time), but my doctor says she doesn't think I'll make it to my appointment on Thursday. I sure hope she's right.

    We'll see...

(39w 2d): They say no news is good news, but sometimes no news makes you feel like you'll be pregnant until christmas.

Jake is probably weighing in somewhere around 7 pounds, and roughly 21.5 inches long (head to toe).

I feel like I've been watching (or at least hearing about) everyone around me *finally* go into labor. I know my turn is coming, but sheesh I hate going last!

Last week I realized that I'm a product of the "instant gratification" generation (one minute for a microwave burrito!? But I want it now!!). This morning I was trying to talk myself into how amazing it is that I created a whole perfect little person inside my body in ONLY nine months! Seriously, this close it really doesn't help.

(38w 2d): I suppose I should continue to update, even though I am hot and tired and sore. I keep making up labor symptoms just to give myself something to do.

The books say Jake should be somewhere between 6 1/2 and 7 pounds, and about 21 inches head to toe. Of course at this point all babies vary, and we won't really know how accurate all these books are until he is here. They also say that it is very likely that I'm as big as I'm going to get too. This is a good thing, if I get much bigger I will refuse to get off the couch at all.

I've been doing many of the things the old wive's tales say will induce labor. We had mexican food the other night, I've been trying to stay on my feet as much as possible, and drinking red raspberry leaf tea. I'm about ready to try a somersault, but Matt really doesn't want me to (guys are such chickens). I guess I'll flip a coin between eggplant parmasean and kung pao chicken for dinner tonight.

If anyone has any labor inducing suggestions, please let me know. We're having a heat wave, I'm the size of an elephant, and I can't even have a margarita.

Last night Matt and his mom both commented (without knowing the other had said it) that I could still be pregnant by his cousin's wedding on August 14th. "Ya never know." Matt's next comment was, "wow, that was the most evil look I've ever seen." He even went a little pale.

He just bought himself midnight diaper duty for a week.

(37w): So, the books say Jake weighs almost 6.5 pounds, and is probably about 21 inches in total length (14 inches crown-to-rump). His toenails have reached the end of his toes, and he is gaining 1/2 to 1 ounce every day (about 1/2 pound a week).

An interesting statistic: 85% of babies are born within two weeks of their due date. This leaves a 4-week window, and I haven't even made it to day one of that window yet. With my luck it'll be like waiting for the cable guy, he'll show up in the last five minutes of that window so you have no 'real' right to be angry about it taking so long. Of course just like the cable guy, I expect Jake to come out with a little innocent smirk on his face. Yes, as the progeny of Matt and I, the true reason for his existence is to torture me.

I've realized why women say the last few weeks are the longest and most difficult. Not only are you sore and tired, but there isn't a whole lot you can do to keep yourself entertained. So I sit, and I wait, and just hope to get the painful part over with soon, so we can all get on with our lives.

Matt and I spent a good five minutes last night playing the, "what about riiiiight... now! okay, how 'bout ... now! nope, okay what about... now!" game. Unfortunately nothing ever happens when you play that game, but we did get a good laugh out of it.

My two big goals for the day; finish packing my bag for the hospital, and make a trip out to Target. Wish me luck.

(36w 5d): Rush was absolutely brilliant! I just had to share, although I am paying for it dearly today, it was worth every minute! We had awesome seats, so close we could see the expressions on the guys faces.

Going to a concert 8 months pregnant has its benefits. When we got to the theater it looked like we'd have to park a million miles away, but Matt asked the parking attendant if there were any spots that were a bit better for his pregnant wife to walk from. Sure enough, they had a row of spots blocked off right up front, and we ended up about three parking spots away from the front gate (and it didn't cost us anything)! At first I was saying I didn't need any special treatment, I'm not disabled or anything. But, by the time it was over, and we had to walk out of the stadium and to the car, my swollen ankles and feet were thankful to be so close!

Matt spent a lot of the concert massaging my sore back, and making sure I was okay. Not to mention feeling my belly, Jake was dancing just as much as we were. I think all three of us had a great time.

Today I spent most of the day on the couch with my poor swollen feet and ankles up. Matt did a bunch of chores, including putting the car seat in the car, and even made dinner. He's awesome!

Now that the show is over, I've given Jake permission to come any time he wants. Let's just hope he decides to make it soon, I'm getting impatient!

By the way, for anyone keeping track, at my last doctor's appointment I had somehow lost a half pound. Could this be a sign? Another point of interest; I was walking into a bathroom at the concert last night, and passed a couple of ladies talking... the only snippett of their conversation I caught was "and Jacob was born early." I'm sure that is a sign!

(36w): Amazing that another week has gone by isn't it? Jake should weigh around 6 pounds, and his crown-to-rump length is over 13.5 inches (total length: ~20.7 inches). "Your pregnancy week by week" says my uterus is probably up under my ribs by now. I could have told you something was under there even without the book.

Most of my time now is spent either being so tired I can't keep my eyes open, or so full of energy I don't know what to do with myself. But, mostly ready to be done, and on with the next step of this whole baby thing.

I have edited and posted the pictures from the shower. Thanks so much to everyone! It was so much fun!! Also, I posted belly photos taken over the weekend. I just have to say, I seriously don't feel as big as I look!!

Matt and I went out and bought a new video camera too so we can get plenty of baby footage. I plan to play with it over the next few days and get some video up on the site. Yes, you'll actually get to see the belly in action (if I can get the darn thing to work).

(35w 2d): Jake now weighs over 5.5 pounds! His crown to rump length by this week is about 13.2 inches, and total length is around 20.25 inches. He is busy storing fat, and preparing himself for birth (hm.. me too)! He will go from 8% body fat (week 34) to 15% by the time he is born.

I was reading this morning that as my uterus puts pressure on my diaphragm, my heart will become displaced upward and to the left. I'm not sure why I find that fascinating, but I do.

I also read that 85% of babies are born within two weeks of their due date, either early or late. But, I keep teasing Matt that I'll probably go into labor next week while the guys are here putting in the new floors. Actually, as long as he holds out through next week, and the Rush show on Saturday (7/10), he can come whenever he wants!

The baby shower was last weekend, and was wonderful! I think I'm still recovering! It was a long, fun day, and I appreciate everyone coming, and all the time and effort everyone put into it. I have a couple of pictures on my camera that I will post today, but I am still waiting for Jill and Tela to email me the rest of them. I'll post them as soon as I get them. I'll also try to remember to have Matt get a picture of the ever expanding belly... I know it has been a couple of weeks!
