Jake's Journey

January 2005

So, here's what I'm gonna do... *grin*

I prefer the blog format from the other page (http://giddygrrl.bravejournal.com/), so I'm going to post the journal entries in both places for now, and there will be a link to the blog on this page near the bottom in the "Sites to Visit" section.

That blog will have a place for comments, and I can put pictures directly into the journal entry (which I LOVE). I will also change the journal so that the "Jakes Website" button will link back to here.

By the way... have I mentioned that Jake is teething? More on that later!

hahaha! April Fools! I got you all!

Looks like i'm going to keep this site after all. I put some time and energy into a new site (a few times over), and after all that, I decided I like this one better after all.

So, never mind about that last post... I'm a woman, I have the right to change my mind as often as I like.

(see this post with pictures at: http://giddygrrl.bravejournal.com/)

We decided to go out to dinner last night... all three of us... together, in a restaurant, in public. Okay, so it wasn't as bad as I expected.

Matt & I hadn't been to Red Lobster since I was pregnant, and NEEDED cheddar bay biscuits, so we thought maybe we'd give it a shot. Since it was starting to get late we decided to take the baby with us instead of keeping his grandparents up past their bed time, besides, we really have to get back to having a life... even with a baby.

So, even though the wait time was about a half-hour, and we don't have the infant carrier anymore (someone decided that he's not an infant anymore, and he's going to grow all big and strong and stuff... whatever), we waited. We passed Jake back and forth between us while he laughed at strangers, and at lobsters, until we finally got a table.

After a bit of "what do we do with the baby now" confusion, we got him settled in a high chair with the cart cover over it and a few toys. I was amazed. He looked so big and kid-like sitting up in a high chair smiling and playing (and trying to steal my biscuit)! The wait staff thought he was adorable, and there were a couple of them that would stop and say hi to him nearly every time they passed our table. Yes, family, friends, and internet, we had the cutest baby in the whole restaurant.

I'm not being biased at all either.

Sunday we went out CAR SHOPPING! Yay! Lucky Jake got to spend the whole day playing with Grandma and Grandpa while Mommy and Daddy were wheeling and dealing, and driving, and listening to sales pitches, and leaving one lot and going to another. Quite a long day for us.

So now I have this big-ass SUV, really, we bought it for Jake. Now he has plenty of room, and Mommy won't bang his head every time she tries to put him into his car seat. Seriously, its amazing how difficult it can be to put a wiggling flailing baby into a car seat...poor kid.

As I sit writing this, Jake is in the other room enjoying some play-time in his exersaucer. I know he is enjoying himself because of the running commentary.

It goes something like this: ah da da {raspberry, gurgle} ahbada oooh ah ah ah {raspberry, squeek}ahh ma ah ahda ba baba ahhh ooooh {coo, gurgle}ah ba {laugh}...

You know your life has completely changed when you can sit back and just listen to that all day long. You know you've given your child your own odd sense of humor when you both laugh in the same place.

    Hey! It was funny okay?

    Smack those lips baby!

And I thought Jake was learning and changing quickly before! Holy cow!

We've had to start hiding the remote control from the baby. If he sees it, he wants it, and no amount of offering other toys will satisfy him. He doesn't want his toys, he wants mommy and daddy's toys!

The biggest problem is that you can only get replacement Tivo remotes directly from the manufacturer. So, if one breaks (it has happened before, simply horrifying), you have to get online and order it. Of course, since you can't work the Tivo without it, and watching "regular" TV is impossible once you've had Tivo, you MUST get express shipping! When all was said and done I think the dang remote ended up costing us somewhere around $50.

Obviously, this is not a toy for the baby. By the way, when he does get it, it goes directly into his mouth... baby loves Tivo too.

Typically while Matt and I eat dinner, Jake is in his high chair surrounded by toys, watching us eat. Over the months he has been VERY good about just sitting and doing his own thing for a bit. Recently he has started watching us intently while we eat. So, of course I talk to him, and make faces... all the things a perfectly sane, normal mommy does (and if they aren't, please don't tell me).

Jake has been known, for a couple of months now, to blow some pretty good raspberries (have I mentioned we call it "the waterfall" around here). But, the other night he smacked his lips at us, also not unusual, but not the most common sound he makes. So, of course, I smack my lips back. The funny part is that this time he didn't laugh or smile, he watched me then did it again, so I did it again, then he did it, then I did it... you get the idea. I was amazed! (funny how easily amused I am these days)

The next morning I get up, and Matt tells me that in trying to get Jake to go back to sleep at 4:00 am he was "shhhhh..."-ing, then suddenly shocked when Jake spit out the pacifier and started "shhhh.."-ing Matt right back! I can't wait to see this one for myself!
