Dreaming of Sleep
I guess its pretty obvious that between the crawling, standing, and teething, I haven't had much time to keep you updated. I do think about writing often, and long for the days when Jake slept for more than an hour at a time and stayed in the spot I put him in. Yes, they grow up quickly. Sometimes even overnight.
One day Jake was on his belly on the floor, army crawling just a little. The next day I put him on the floor and look away for two seconds, the next thing I know he's got the cat cornered and is reaching for his tail. Now if he's getting into something, you can be sure its going directly into his mouth (yes, even the cat's tail). Mauly spends most of her day in Ninja mode... stealthily trying to hide from and lick Jake at the same time. Fisher sleeps... mostly outside these days.
It was only two days after he started crawling when I heard Jake wake from his nap, so I went into his room and he was standing up in his crib. It scared me half to death. Like poltergeist, one minute the chair is over here.... the next its over there... how did it happen? Must be magic or something.
The biggest problem is that he is still so small and uncoordinated that he does a lot of falling. Falling usually entails hitting his head on something. Mind you this something is never like a stuffed bear, or mattress, or pillow. The boy could be surrounded by softness, and still find a way to crack his skull against something VERY solid. Matt and I have discussed it, and we're getting him a helmet this weekend.
So, now not only is he completely mobile, but the only time he is even remotely okay with sitting still is while he's asleep, and sometimes while he's eating.
The best part is, just when I think I've had enough, and I can't take any more. Just when I'm ready to rip my ears off and eat them... He smiles. He's lucky he's so cute, or his mommy would be completely insane by now.

First Words??
Last night we decided to spend some time outside enjoying the perfect 'California in springtime' evening. Jake in his highchair, Matt and I at the table playing dominoes. We don't get through the game nearly as quickly as we used to what with all the stopping and playing with the baby, and picking up the toys, and such. But, I don't think either one of us minds too much.
In his repertoire of sounds, Jake throws in a lot of dadadadadada's and a couple of mamamama's. Most of the time when he says something that makes sense I'll repeat it back to him, or respond to him as if he has asked a question. For example; Jake says,"dadadadadadadada" and I respond,"Where's daddy? He's over there! Say hi daddy!" Sometimes I'll even include the sign for key words (like daddy).
So, last night Jake says "dadadada", and I put my thumb to my forehead (http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm) and say dada. And what does the boy wonder do? You've got it, put his thumb straight up to his forehead, and say dada. Matt and I were shocked. So, of course, I do it again... and Jake does it again.
Well, this was like throwing a peanut butter cup into a cage of monkeys. Matt and I went nuts. I'm sure the neighbors think we've finally lost our minds (they knew we didn't have far to go anyway). Jake did it three or four times throughout the night, and though he hasn't done it today (I haven't asked him to), I'm still positive he's a genius!
