Jake's Journey

September 2005

Yesterday was Jake's first experience with (cue suspense building music here) DAYCARE!!!

It wasn't like "real" daycare, where you drop them off and leave all together, it was just daycare at the gym, he was literally 15 feet from the work out area. But still...

Apparently he did really well for about the first half-hour or so. But, then from the opposite side of the gym I heard him screaming. I tried to ignore it for a couple of minutes, thinking he would stop, but it just kept going...and LOUD.

So, I go in to see what was going on, and find out he was great until he looked up, and I wasn't there. I spent the last 15 minutes of my work out sitting in the day care room watching him play. No, he wasn't letting me get away again. Every couple of minutes he would look up, find me, give me a smile, and go back to playing.

Looks like daycare is going to take some practice.

There are two things on TV Jake enjoys watching: Boobah and Baby Einstein. As of Saturday morning, he has figured out how to ask for the one he wants.

One of the first things he said Saturday morning was ee-aye-ee-aye-oh! I was so excited I practically ran to the TV to turn it on for him. He smiled and laughed at Baby Einstein's "Neighborhood Animals" while he was eating breakfast.

Today he said, "Boohbah." So now he's out sitting in the floor in front of the TV watching Boohbah.

He says Cat, Dog, Duck, and Dada, all very clearly. Sometimes I can even get him to say Mama. He is working on saying more, it usually comes out MO, but he knows the sign so he does it at the same time and gets his point across. BAA usually means bottle (which he sometimes uses to refer to his sippy cup), and sometimes he says BAA when he'd rather have milk in his cup than water.

Jake also has no problem pokin you in the eye and saying "ice" (well, it almost sounds like "eyes"). So if you are coming to visit, or Jake is coming to visit you, you may want to keep your safety glasses handy.
