Jake's Journey

    Brag Time!!

Just thought I'd show off my brilliant child for a minute....

Jake knows 10 or so colors that I can think of off the top of my head, pretty much all the shapes (including star, heart, oval, rectangle... and thanks to Matt will sometimes bust out with hexagon). He will name them correctly about 90% of the time.

He knows the whole alphabet, will sing the song (if prompted), can recognize all the letters (even out of order), and can recognize the ASL sign for each one too. He's getting better at doing the signs himself (just doesn't quite have the fine motor skills down yet). Last night he shocked me by telling me that "R says rrrrrr" "S says sssssss" and "G says guh." My mom said,"you are in so much trouble, that is exactly what you were doing right before you started reading" (at around 3! eek!). Apparently at 3 and 4 years old I would read things out of the newspaper and ask my mom what they meant. Matt told me this morning that they were able to go through the whole alphabet the other day.

Numbers... Jake can count to 10. about 20% of the time he skips the number three. I have no idea why, the kid just has an aversion to the number three, and used to refuse to say it at all, but he's getting better. He can recognize at least 1-10 by sight, but I haven't been working on the signs as much, so I'm not sure if he recognizes them. I just wrote the number 12 on a piece of paper to see if he recognized it and he said it was twenty-two. I didn't even know he knew the word twenty.

He speaks in full sentences about 65% of the time, uses please and thank you about 45% of the time (without prompt). About half the time he uses pronouns correctly, and refers to himself as "I" and says "my" and "me" (for some reason that has always shocked me). This morning I woke up to, "Mommy, change my diaper, please. (then a pause) Mommy, want milk and cheerios please."

He can name nearly any animal you can show him a picture of, and tell you what that animal says.

Yet, for some reason he won't answer the questions, "what's your name?" and "how old are you?" without me telling him what to say.

He knows over, under, above, next to, "turn it around," forward, backward, and quite possibly left and right (we've only tested that one a couple of times, so it might be coincidence).

    So cool.

    Trusting Mommy's Intuition

About 3:30 this afternoon, I'm sitting here working on bridal shower invites for my soon-to-be-sister-in-law. Jake had just gotten up from his nap, and was sitting on the couch watching the Backyardigans, and coughing.

I start thinking... somthing just isn't right about that cough. Its been a week and it hasn't gotten any better, if anything its gotten worse... maybe I'll call Kaiser and get an opinion.

The advice nurse was really nice and asked me all the scary questions they have to ask (re: whooping cough & meningitis), then she says, "Everything sounds normal for a kid with a cold or flu, but maybe you should come in anyway, just to make sure he doesn't have some kind of infection." I say sure, why not, get our stuff together and we go in.

Jake's doctor listens to his chest, looks in his ears and down his throat, all the normal stuff, and says, "Well he sounds ok, but, its Friday afternoon... how would you feel about going and getting an x-ray to rule out pneumonia.. just in case." Again, I say sure, better safe than sorry.

X-ray comes back and to everyone's surprise, Pneumonia. Even the doctor was like, "I really didn't expect to see this." It looked pretty nasty, but Dr. G said it was good that we came in when we did because it would have gotten progressively worse, and Jake could have ended up really sick had I waited another week.

I felt so sad for him, I let him have ice cream for dinner. Poor kiddo.

    The Party!

Jake's birthday party was a wonderful success. Thanks to everyone who was able to make it, and an extra thanks to Karyn (and family) for making it an extra fun day.

The kids had a great time jumping in the bounce house, and decorating their own party hats. The adults enjoyed good food, and good conversation. All in all it was a very nice time.

Jake's favorite gift was the bubble mower from Uncle Marc adn Aunt Janet. Once it was put together, he pushed it around for the rest of the day (and half of the next day). He keeps looking at daddy and saying, "help mow the lawn?" I'll be sure to get some pictures next time he actually gets to go out and help daddy. They make quite a team.
